Want to Build a Beauty Brand? Learn From These Pros

01/26/2025

Two of the beauty industry’s biggest names, Ben Barkworth and Nick Stenson, come together for an exciting episode of Tease Talks to share insights from their impressive careers and business ventures.

Barkworth, guest host of Tease Talks, is an international award-winning hairstylist, salon owner, and founder of FASTFOILS, known for his innovative approach to hair foils.

Stenson, an international beauty expert, celebrity stylist, and founder of Nick Stenson Beauty, is transforming the industry with eco-friendly and groundbreaking product innovations.

In this episode, Barkworth and Stenson share how they grew from stylists to industry leaders, highlighting key moments that shaped their careers. They discuss the challenges of building their brands, the value of mentorship, and how they’ve stayed ahead in a constantly evolving industry.

Stenson reflects on launching Nick Stenson Beauty, aiming to bridge the gap between professional-grade products and consumer accessibility. At Ulta Beauty, he saw how overwhelming the product selection could be for customers.

“I wanted to make sure I created a brand for artists that’s kind of like an artist tool kit. And I feel like I did that. But then at the same breath, I wanted to make sure the brand was something easy for consumers to navigate.”

Both founders emphasize the importance of educating clients as part of their brand philosophies. Stenson highlights the responsibility of stylists to recommend the right products and guide clients in maintaining their styles at home, while Barkworth focuses on equipping clients with tools and tips to protect their hair investments.

Barkworth expands that, “It’s up to us as stylists behind the chair to educate our guests in the salon. To provide them with the tools to protect their investment – their color, they’re cut. But also to provide them with the education, tips, and tricks on how to style their own  hair and utilizing tools to be able to do that.”

Building a successful beauty brand requires a mix of resilience, vision, and strategy. Stenson and Barkworth dive into what it takes to create a brand and their experience with their respective brands.

Perseverance is key, as creating a brand or thriving in the beauty industry demands consistent effort and the determination to overcome setbacks. Growth often involves embracing uncertainty and pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. Yet even during uncertain times of growth, it is important to stay committed to the mission and values that your brand is built upon. Believing in your vision will help you navigate obstacles with confidence.

Finally, remember to allow time for reflection and self-care. Recharging your energy and pursuing personal interests can keep you motivated, creative, and ready to tackle the next chapter of your journey.
