ICYMI, the 2025 award season officially kicked off last night with the 82nd Golden Globes, which took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. As expected, the star-studded affair brought forth so many outstanding hair looks. Among all of the stunning hairstyles that graced the red carpet, we couldn’t help but notice that there was one hair trend that totally took over the night: Old Hollywood bobs.
Both Zendaya, who was nominated for her performance in Challengers, and Selena Gomez, who was nominated for her performances in Emilia Pérez and Only Murders in the Building, exuded serious glamour with their retro bobs. Gomez, achieved hers with some help from celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora who crafted a deeply side-parted bob that was inspired by Sofia Loren, Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe. As for Zendaya, her hairstylist Coree Moreno styled a curly bob for the star that offered a more modern take on old Hollywood look.
Ahead, keep scrolling for a breakdown of exactly how Campora and Moreno created these dazzling hair looks.
Selena Gomez’s Side-Parted Retro Bob
Get the Look:
- Campora began by prepping the hair with Defy Damage Protective Shampoo ($25.00) and Defy Damage Conditioner ($26.00). Next, he applied a small amount of Defy Damage KBond20 Power Masque ($39.00) and massaged it for 2 minutes.
- With clean and damp hair, he mixed both Defy Damage Protective Shield ($28.00) and Dream Blowout Thermal Protection Crème ($26.50) on mids and ends. He sectioned 2-inch sections and applied JoiWhip Design Foam ($22.50) to roots for volume.
- Next, he sectioned the hair into 2-inch parts to blow dry hair with the ghd Natural Bristle Round Brush ($40) and ghd Helios Hair Dryer ($279.00). He blow dried the front left section upwards and backwards, then side part upwards and forward. This helped to create a shiny, voluminous foundation for the look.
- With the hair shiny, voluminous, and healthy-looking, he sectioned 1-inch vertical parts, sprayed with Joico Heat Hero Glossing Thermal Protection ($24.00), curled with ghd Curve Classic Curl Iron ($200.00), and pinned the hair in place while it cooled for 15 mins. He repeated this for the back and front right side.
- For the left front section, he used the ghd Curve Classic Curl Iron ($209.00) for the bottom and the ghd Curve Soft Curl Iron ($209.00) for the top, curling forward and pinning.
- Pro Tip: Using two different size irons allows the top section to lay beautifully on the tighter bottom waves.
- Next, he let the hair cool for 15 minutes. “Once set, I removed the pins and brushed out each section with the ghd Dresser Oval Dressing Brush ($40.00) for a smooth, voluminous finish.”
- Finally, he sectioned a diagonal part and added two Great Lengths “Aria” tape-in hair extensions near the hairline, followed by two Great Lengths “Essenza” tape-in hair extensions for added density. “I brushed through and blended them to sculpt the wave, shaping it around the face.”
- He then brushed these pieces out and combined together to begin sculpting the wave and adapting it around the face. The side part is brushed forward while the other side backward to open the face up and allowing for the neck and jewelry to be seen.
- “Finally, I applied a pea-sized amount of Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock Glossing Oil ($27.00) to the ends for added shine.”
Zendaya’s Curly Retro Bob
Get the Look:
- First, Moreno sprayed the Nexxus Epic Shine Anti Humidity Spray ($15.98) to set the foundation of the look.
- Next, he sprayed the Nexxus Volume Medium Hold Mousse ($15.98) from root to tip on damp hair for added volume.
- “I finished up the foundation steps with an old school roller set for mega volume before drying the hair under a hooded dryer until 90 percent dry.
- “Once hard rollers are removed, we kept the hair pin curled for an ultra-set curl using the ghd Helios Professional Hair Dryer ($279.00) with the ghd Professional Diffuser ($30.00) on the coldest temperature to lock in that shine.
- Next, we used the ghd Curve Classic Curl Iron ($209.00) to bump away roller dents at the roots and smooth the hairline.”
- He used BELLAMI Hair’s Silk Seam Clip-In Extensions ($190.00) in a mixture of Chestnut Brown and Chocolate Brown cut to her exact length to seamlessly blend the look and add fullness.
- ‘Using ghd Curve Classic Curl Iron, I pre-curled and set BELLAMI Silk Seam Clip-In Extensions for extra texture in this flame wave faux bob.
- Lastly, I sprayed the Nexxus Comb Thru Flexible Hold Hair Spray ($14.99) to finish the look and hold the curls in place.”
