Nicky Clarke on Crafting Iconic Styles for Vogue and A-List Celebrities

10/23/2024

Nicky Clarke was advised to skip college and pursue a career in the hair and beauty industry. He didn’t just take that advice – he ran with it and never looked back! For Clarke, it’s all about that hands-on experience, learning from others, trusting your gut, embracing all opportunities, and keeping your expectations in check – these are the elements key to gaining an edge in the industry.

In this episode of Volume Up by The Tease, we sat down with Clarke, a legendary hairstylist, to break down his journey from sweeping salon floors at 16 to shooting for Vogue at 17. Clarke reflects on his journey, from his transformative years honing his craft alongside John Frieda, the renowned British hairstylist, and his role in helping develop the Frizz Ease Brand.

People can instantly recognize when a hairstyle is Clarke’s work; his signature touch is classic and timeless.

“I’m not afraid to embrace a house style. I think that the people that ‘poo poo’ it are making a mistake. If you think about in the music industry or in the fashion industry, the idea is being able to know that that’s that person’s thing, even if it has a twist”.

From Naomi Campbell and David Bowie to Donatella Versace and Princess Diana, Clarke’s skilled hands have touched the hair of countless celebrities. Even with his impressive work for both British and American Vogue, he remains refreshingly down to earth.

“This has been a really incredible gift to me. I’ve worked with some of the best people in the world. I’ve been so blessed, and privileged. There are pinch-me moments”.

Clarke let us know that The Nicky Clarke brand is here to stay and set to expand. Clarke discusses his vision for growing his empire and why he believes the AirStylePRO – an infrared dryer and styler that’s creating buzz among hair professionals – is the future of hairstyling. Plus, he gives us a sneak peek at what’s next for the brand.
