Since 1981, Wigs for Kids has been on a mission to help children who have experienced hair loss due to a medical issue. The nonprofit organization collects hair and monetary donations in order to create custom hair replacement systems for children without any cost to their family.
The wig creating process is not simple nor is it cheap. Each wig uses approximately 150,000 strands of genuine hair, hand crafted in order to truly radiate a natural look. Wigs for Kids partners with experienced stylists in order to ensure each hair piece is perfect. Overall, the process requires around $1,800, which is why the organization relies on both monetary and hair donations.
Wigs for Kids has helped children with a variety of different medical conditions, such as alopecia, trichotillomania, burns, and cancer. The children not only receive a wig, but also a sense of self-esteem that they may have lost. Since these wigs are of such high quality, the children do not have to worry about them falling off or needing to be adjusted throughout the day.
“They won’t come off on the baseball field or in the playground,” says Jeffrey Paul, founder and executive director. “Kids can count on them. And because kids look just the way they did before, they feel better about themselves. They look in the mirror and their eyes light up. To see that light in their eyes… that’s priceless.”
