San Juan, Puerto Rico-based Sam Villa Ambassador, Redken Artist and salon owner, Jorge Pérez loves the zigzag mullet. He says, “I have guests that love having their hair long, yet don’t have any movement at all… so I give them a zigzag mullet and it changes everything.”
“Right now, hair is all about lots of texture and natural movement. And I love lazy hair for fall and winter, this cut is the next best thing, after the bun, for college girls with waves,” he adds. “It can go days between washes, just wake up and shake your head or pull back and have all the fun layers hang free.” Scroll for a detailed breakdown on how to cut and style this look.
How to Cut:
- Divide the front and back with a zigzag parting from the top of the crown to the back of the ear to create lots of texture and movement.
- Elevate the back to 90° and point cut with a dry cutting shear that allows the elbow to stay down, and cuts through large sections of dry hair to create softness and texture.
- Make a triangle section in front for the bangs, then take the sides and elevate forward and connect to bangs, slide cut starting from the jaw to the ends.
- Create a halo section on the top of the head and use the shortest hair from the back or top of the crown and slide away until the fringe.
- For the perfect zigzag texture, use a Sam Villa Signature Series 14 Tooth Point Cutting, it can quickly create separation and negative space.
- Switch to a Sam Villa Signature Series Razor and use like a pencil or marker to detail pieces and make them stand out.
How to Style:
- Divide hair in 5 sections and secure with dry clips.
- Apply styling or curling cream (Perez uses Redken Hydrating Curl Cream).
- Work a Sam Villa Thermal Ionic Pro Vent Brush through hair to detangle and smooth for a static-free polished finished.
- Use a Sam Villa Vision Blow Dryer and Deep Bowl Diffuser to first hover over the head to dry and seal the cuticle to avoid frizz, then fully dry hair section by section. This helps reduce frizz, dries hair faster and ensures no wet areas are left behind.
