Jennifer Yen: Power Rangers Villain to Beauty Entrepreneur

01/20/2025

The looks we see on television, in movies, or in editorial shoots don’t just appear out of nowhere. They require a lot of work behind the scenes. For many actors and models, it means hours spent in the makeup chair to achieve that perfect, final look.

For Jennifer Yen, well-known for her role as the villain in Power Rangers, this was her reality. She would spend hours on end, getting a full face of makeup to bring her character to life.

Yen joined Volume Up by The Tease and doesn’t hold back. She shares how those hours and layers of makeup took a serious toll on her skin. Combined with her upbringing immersed in Chinese culture, where skincare is seen as a form of self-care, it shaped her approach to beauty and led her to create not one, but multiple beauty brands – designed and tested to work for everyone.

Drawing on remedies passed down through her family and her deep-rooted connection to Chinese culture, she began to explore holistic solutions that combined tradition with modern beauty.

Her skincare struggles sparked the idea to create her own solutions. Yen first launched Purlisse, a skincare line inspired by Asian remedies and focused on providing gentle yet effective solutions for sensitive skin. Not stopping there, Yen then started Yensa, a brand blending superfood ingredients with makeup.

Her latest brand, Jooy, tackles scalp care—a category often overlooked in beauty. Inspired by her family’s rituals and her own experience with hair loss during the pandemic, Yen developed products that treat the scalp as “head skin,” combining fermented ingredients with cutting-edge formulas to promote hair and scalp health.

“For the longest time it was all about hair, hair, hair, and really, ignoring the scalp, scalp, scalp. Now, it’s reversing that… You’re hair will become naturally healthy and beautiful if you take care of your scalp.”
