The Tease: What are the biggest mistakes people make when attempting an at-home, sunless tan?
Melanie Richards: Not properly exfoliating 2 days prior. It’s important for your skin to recover and reset its natural PH as well as natural amino acids. Amino acids are what reacts with the DHA (active ingredient in sunless products) to brown skin cells. Applying self tanner too close to a shower or exfoliation cuts down the process and results significantly.
What are your pro-tips for the perfect at-home, sunless tan?
Richards: Be sure to have proper skin preparation as mentioned above and use a mitt for an even application. Stop using soaps and body washes that have mineral oil! Mineral oil creates a barrier over your skin which will not allow the DHA (active ingredient) to process evenly.
