Chappell Roan Brings Joan of Arc Realness to the ’24 VMAs With the Help of Dom Forletta

09/12/2024

Chappell Roan is easily the biggest thing in pop music and her entrance at last night’s VMAs suggests she knows it. The “Midwest Princess” singer looked more like a medieval princess, wearing a tulle gown, her hair back in fiery red braids by celebrity hairstylist Dom Forletta, sword in hands for photos. She even brought her own antique rug to the red carpet!

The look, which became even more obvious during her performance, was Joan of Arc. And very camp.

The Tease connected with Forletta about the look, created with Olivia Garden tools and Bumble and bumble. styling products and he generously shared inspiration and more. “For Chappell’s red carpet look, we wanted to create a very natural, kind of medieval soft wave – almost like it could be her natural texture, with intricate braids in the front and back of her hair,” commented Forletta.

Get the Look:

  1. “I started by prepping her hair with the Bb.Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer to hydrate and provide heat protection, next blow-drying her hair using Olivia Garden’s Super HP Dryer and the Ceramic + Ion Speed XL Extra-Long Barrel Hair Brush.
  2. For the curls, I use the Titanium + Ion Curling Iron, to ensure the curls are well-defined. And after curling, I brushed her hair with the brand’s Detangler Brush to separate the ringlets and give some natural movement, then I added in Bb.Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil to increase the shine in the hair.
  3. At the front, I sectioned off parts of her hair to braid and pin them back. I applied Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Long Last Styling Cream on top to soften and help the braids stay in place.
  4. For the back braids, I actually created a netted braid piece to attach to her hair. Bumble and Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Long Last Styling Cream and Bb.Spray de Mode Hairspray were crucial here at reducing frizz and providing extra hold for the red carpet.
  5. To finish, I applied the Bb.Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Long Last Styling Cream for a polished, long-lasting look.”
