1% for the Planet serves as an accountability partner for businesses that reject the status quo and actively contribute to environmental causes. Since its inception in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet members have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to environmental partners worldwide.
Currently, 1% for the Planet boasts over 5,000 business members, who have collectively contributed more than $435 million to approved environmental nonprofits. These contributions support a diverse range of environmental initiatives, from combating climate change and protecting biodiversity to promoting sustainable agriculture and clean energy.
Chouinard, co-founder of 1% for the Planet, captures the essence of this movement perfectly: “The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.”
