If there’s one annual announcement that we always look forward to, it’s Pantone’s Color of the Year. Being that Pantone is the authority on all things color-related, their color of the year announcement not only attempts to set the tone for the next eleven months, but it also helps shape and influence major trends in the hair space.
For 2022, Pantone has officially crowned “Very Peri” (or PANTONE 17-3938) as its color of the year. This hue, which is characterized as a “dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone” and is one that encourages “personal inventiveness and creativity,” according to the company’s press release.
“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of PANTONE 17-3938 Veri Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute. “Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”
Instead of choosing one of it’s existing colors, which Pantone has done for the past 23 years, the company opted to create a brand new shade from scratch.
“Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year education color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place,” explained Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engaged and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.”
