After a three-year long wait, the Met Gala finally returned to its signature spot on the First Monday of May. Easily the most fashionable night of the year, this year’s extravaganza brought forth a slew of fashion and Hollywood’s most influential figures to celebrate the second installment of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition on American fashion, called In America: An Anthology of Fashion.
Alongside Anna Wintour, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Regina King, and Lin-Manuel Miranda served as this year’s celebrity co-chairs. With “gilded glamour” as official dress code for the night, attendees were tasked with paying homage to opulence and glitz of NYC’s Gilded Age with their ensembles—and more importantly, with their hair.
While some went all in on the theme donning pretty updos and dramatic fascinators, others took it purely as a suggestion, instead choosing to forgo the theme entirely. Regardless of how each attendee chose to interpret the theme, everyone totally left us inspired (or at the very least entertained) with their looks.
Ahead, here are our favorite hairstyles from the 2022 Met Gala.
Alicia Keys
This low braided pony adorned with eye-catching discs that hairstylist Fesa Nu dreamed up for Alicia Keys looked like a work of art.
Camila Cabello
We have major heart eyes for this textured updo that hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons styled for Camila Cabello, complete with pretty floral embellishments.
To create this look, Fitsimmons began by dampening Cabello’s hair and then spraying it with
Andrew Fitzsimons AF1 10-in1 Leave In Conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of her hair. After priming and prepping, he spritzed the Andrew Fitzsimons Model Volume Wave Spray throughout and then diffused her locks to help accentuate her natural waves. Then he sprayed one of my favorite products, the Andrew Fitzsimons Après Sexe Texture Spray, to achieve loose, touchable texture, giving it a bit of extra hold for an up-do.
Next, he gathered the hair with my fingers and pulled and secured it into a high but loose ponytail, spraying a few more spritz of the Andrew Fitzsimons Après Sexe Texture Spray to further help give it that effortless tousled look. He then twisted the pieces of hair into a messy top knot, securing it with pins, maintaining a loose look.
After that, he pulled a few loose strands out to help frame her face, to keep the look soft. When the dress arrived at her room, he saw the beautiful floral components and knew he wanted to work them into her hair in some capacity. So, Fitzsimons asked Prabel if he had additional flowers that he could add to the bun. He tucked the flowers tactfully around the bun, versus over the bun as he was inspired by how the flowers mimicked a “peek-a-boo” effect on the dress itself. Finally, Fitzsimons set the look with Andrew Fitzsimons Hard Strong Hold Hairspray, and finished off with the Andrew Fitzsimons Prism Shine Invisible Shine Spray for a pop of red carpet shine.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian channeled Marilyn Monroe with her iconic “Mr. President” dress and platinum blonde locks that were styled in a slick blond bun by hairstylist Chris Appleton.
Emma Chamberlain
Emma Chamberlain kept it sleek and chic with her platinum blonde bob that was styled by hairstylist Laura Polko. We loved that addition of a tiara to finish the look off!
Quannah Chasinghorse
We were big fans of the shiny locks and figure 8 braid that hairstylist Naeemah LaFond styled for Quannah Chasinghorse.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker looked radiant with her intricate updo that came courtesy of hairstylist Serge Normant. It paired perfectly with her netted Philip Treacy headpiece.
Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore wowed with her dramatic ‘60s-inspired curls that were styled by hairstylist Marcus Francis. According to Marcus, Moore’s look was inspired by her Tom Ford gown. “We wanted to emulate the elegance and class of the ivory dress by keeping her hairstyle timeless with effortlessly cool locks.”
To achieve this look, Francis prepped hair by washing with Nexxus Ultralight Smooth Weightless Frizz Protection Shampoo and Conditioner to create sleek strands and minimize frizz, especially with this drizzly weather. He then prepped Moore’s hair with Nexxus Ultralight Smooth Frizz Defy Cream Serum followed by Nexxus Weightless Style Prep & Protect Leave-In Spray from roots to ends, and combed it through the hair with Olivia Garden CarbonLite Detangling Comb to evenly distribute the product before adding the Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam to maintain the volume throughout.
Following the hair prep, he sectioned off her hair and started drying it using the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Hair Dryer and Olivia Garden NanoThermic Round Brush to create volume and a flawless blown out look.
Marcus then teased the crown of her hair using the Olivia Garden StyleUp Folding Teasing Brushbefore setting it in a pin curl. He then used the Olivia Garden Titanium + Ion Curling Iron on the rest of Julianne’s hair to create a 60’s textured roll and let the curls set.
To finish off the look, he spritzed each pinned section with the Nexxus Weightless Style Ultra Fine Hair Sprayand swept the hair across her forehead. He sealed the flyaways and ends using the Nexxus Ultralight Smooth Frizz Defy Cream Serumand locked in the look by spraying Nexxus Maxximum Finishing Mistall over to hold the style in place all night long.
Bella Hadid
We couldn’t get enough of Bella Hadid’s half-up half-down curls and braided tendrils that came courtesy of hairstylist Evanie Frausto.
Camila Mendes
Camila Mendes stunned with a tousled up that was styled by hairstylist David Stanwell.
Maude Apatow
Maude Apatow served major Old Hollywood glamour with these stunning finger waves that hairstylist Peter Lux styled using Olivia Garden tools and Fekkai products. To achieve this look, Lux started by spritzing Fekkai Prime Mistthrough Apatow’s hair and applied the Fekkai Root Lift at the root. He then blow-dried hair in horizontal sections using the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Hair Dryer along with the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Round Brush to create tight curls that framed the face and added shine and smoothness throughout.
Next, he created a deep side part using the Olivia Garden Style-up Folding Teasing Brush. Lux then began to curl the right side of Apatow’s hair using Olivia Garden Titanium + Ion Curling Ironin a forward motion. I continued this routine on both sides until reaching the front. Once hair was curled, I let it set and then brushed it out with the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Supreme & Styler Brush to blend the hair sections together and stretch out the curl.
Next, he sprayed the curls with a generous amount of Fekkai Dry Texturizing Spray to give it hold and longevity. Then, he finished off the look using the Olivia Garden CarboSilk Comb to create a wave pattern in the hair. Finally, he secured the look with a pea sized amount of Fekkai Multi-Tasker Perfecting Crème to smooth fly-aways and add shine.
Kacey Musgraves
Kacey Musgraves totally brought the glamour with her pinned curl updo and bottleneck bangs that were styled by hairstylist Giovanni Delgado.
Venus Williams
Venus Williams bedazzled thigh-grazing braids were everything we needed and more. Of course, this dazzling look came courtesy of hairstylist Nikki Nelms.
Olivia Rodrigo
It was the butterflies in the hair for us! Olivia Rodrigo looked like an absolute dream with these gorgeous waves that her hairstylist Clayton Hawkins created for her.
Kaia Gerber
Kaia Gerber was totally giving Pre-Raphaelite realness with these dreamy ultra-long waves that came courtesy of hairstylist Guido Palau. And, how pretty are those metallic barrettes that Palau added to her locks?
Vanessa Hudgens
The gilded gothic witchy vibes were strong with Vanessa Hudgens and this braided bun that hairstylist Danielle Priano dreamed up for her. We especially love the bedazzled thread that she weaved throughout the bun.
To create this look, she began by sectioning the hair, making sure to leave the hairline out. Using Hidden Crown extensions, she applied the wefts with all the hair going in the direction of the ponytail. Next, she pulled all the remaining hair into a slick back pony using SexyHair Not So Hard Up. Then she seperated the pony into 3 sections and braided each section. Taking all three braids, she braided them together. After that, Priano brushed all the hairline back and wrapped it around the ponytrail. She twisted all the hair into a bun. Finally, she finished with a gloss over of SexyHair Spray & Play Harder.
Cara Delevigne
Cara Delevigne looked gilded to the gods with her golden waves that perfectly matched her gold body makeup. To create this stunning look, hairstylist Mara Roszak first prepped the hair with the Wella Professionals Color Fresh Mask in Golden Gloss to create her gorgeous golden tone. “I loved the warmth of the color and also how healthy it made the hair look,” she said. Next, on Delevigne’s wet hair she applied the Wella Professionals EIMI Extra Volume Mousse Strong Hold Volumizing Mousse to achieve a soft hold and added volume.
Then, she applied two pumps of ROZ Santa Lucia styling oil to create a smooth shine for the blow out. After she blew her hair out and once completely dried, shecurled the hair with a 1 and ¼” iron to create the cascading soft waves. Finally, Roszak sprayed in Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm Workable Finishing Hairspray to keep the curls and then to finish, she brushed the hair out for a soft finish and pulled her hair to one side to complete the look.
Sophie Turner
These soft waves that hairstylist Gregory Russell styled for Sophie Turner were pure magic.
Kiki Layne
How major is this texture afro wig that hairstylist Tish Celestine styled for Kiki Layne. She looked incredible!
Winnie Harlow
Hairstylist Davontae Washington took inspiration from a “high fashion ballerina” for this low twisted bun that he created for Winnie Harlow.
To create her look, he began by prepping her wig by shampooing it and then following up with UNITE Lazer Straight Relaxing Fluid to tame and smooth the hair. Next, he used water, UNITE 7Seconds Detangler, and UNITE U Oil, making sure to distribute it from knots to ends. Then, he blew the hair dry to prep so that he could begin flat ironing. After flat ironing, he used the UNITE Conundrum Paste and UNITE Session Max Extra Hold, helping to control the hair and to pull it into a ponytail. He finished with the gloss spray to give the whole look a finished and polished look.
Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion looked absolutely flawless with her curly updo and swirled baby hairs that came courtesy of hairstylist Kellon Deryck.
Chloe Grace Moretz
This textured ‘do that Gregory Russell created for Chloe Grace Moretz was quite the illusion. From the front it looked like an uber-cool slicked pixie, but from the back, it was actually a really beautiful low pony.
