With hair as great as his, it’s no surprise Tim Muir turned it into a career. From a young age, Muir was drawn to hair and the power it has to transform.
“I like the overall change it gives someone and the confidence it gives someone because you can make or break someone with a hairstyle.”
After honing his skills as a salon stylist, Muir made his way into the editorial world. It gave him the creative freedom to experiment and push boundaries in new settings.
After his time in editorial, Muir transitioned into the entertainment world, discovering a whole new way to express his creativity. He jumped into the fast-paced world of film and TV, working with Taylor Sheridan on productions like Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, and more.
Working on these productions with Sheridan took his work to a whole new level. Muir finds himself designing iconic looks for characters, collaborating closely with producers and makeup teams to bring each character’s unique vibe to life through their hair.
Muir’s talent for capturing a character’s essence through hair is clear. He carefully crafts each look to align with the character’s personality, story, and emotions. Muir divulged the behind-the-scenes of some of his favorite looks and how each character’s iconic look came to be, including the controversial hair of Beth.
While what we see on screen may seem picture-perfect, behind the scenes there’s a lot of effort to control the uncontrollable—like Texas’ heat and humidity working on Landman. As Muir puts it, “Every day was a prayer.”
Through all the challenges, Muir has mastered the art of creating looks that transport us to different eras, as seen in productions like 1883 and 1923. With each project, he brings his unique touch to create styles that are authentic and memorable.
Check out Muir’s episode of Volume Up, which is packed with his insights on working on hair in the entertainment industry, including common misconceptions, his life on set, and the process of creating looks for high-profile productions.
