Here’s How Celebrity Hairstylist Marc Mena Created Karla Sofía Gascón’s Loose Waves for the 2025 Golden Globes

01/06/2025

Karla Sofía Gascón, the lead actress and protagonist of the film Emilia Pérez and the first trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, caught everyone’s attention at the 2025 Golden Globes in her dual-toned orange Saint Laurent dress, which was perfectly complemented by a long, loosely-curled hair look.

Sofía Gascón, although not the winner of the Best Actress title, became the first trans woman to accept the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture during Sunday’s award show.

The celebrity hairstylist behind her sleek long hair, Marc Mena, said that “being part of this moment styling the first trans woman nominated for a Golden Globe is an honor beyond words. It’s a testament to how far we’ve come, and how much further we can go in embracing all forms of beauty and talent.”

Mena said that to achieve the voluminous, luxurious look he used Great Lengths Tape-In Extensions.  Ahead, he breaks down exactly how he achieved it.

Get the Look:

  1. To complement Sofía Gascón’s custom one-shoulder Saint Laurent dress, Mena started off by drying her hair from root to end with a large round ceramic brush.
  2. Next, Mena carefully sectioned her hair and applied the new Great Lengths Essenza and Aria Tape-In Extensions to create contrast, body, and fullness throughout the hair.
  3. Once the extensions were securely in place, Mena misted the ends with a touch of water before re-blowing the hair. This step seamlessly blended the extensions with Sofía Gascón’s natural hair for an effortlessly cohesive look.
  4. To create long-lasting volume and movement, Mena sectioned Sofía Gascón’s hair and styled it with a large curling iron, applying a light mist of setting spray to ensure hold and bounce creating a natural, glamorous texture.
  5. For the finishing touch, Mena created a sleek center part and tucked the hair back, allowing her shoulders and neckline to shine followed by a light finishing spray to finish off the style.
