Recreate the Magic of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth’s ‘Wicked’ Premiere Hair

11/12/2024

“Wicked” — part 1 — starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is finally set to hit the silver screen and premieres are happening the world over. Recently, for the LA premiere, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who played Elphaba and Galinda in the original broadway production of “Wicked” some twenty years ago, showed up and out with movie star hair. Menzel wore hers down and to the side in glam loose waves and Chenweth went super sleek. Both styles were magic!

The Tease connected with the actresses’ hairstylists, Paul Norton for Menzel and Johnathan Hanousek for Chenoweth, about the inspiration for their clients’ red carpet hairstyles and how they got the look with Wella Professionals styling products. Read on for more including a detailed breakdown from both!

“For Idina’s Wicked premiere look, I took the dress’s architectural shape and design as my direct inspiration,” said Norton. He added, “Given the open shoulder on one side and predominant volume of the sleeve on the other side, I knew the hair being down, voluminous, and swept to one side would help balance it out visually.” It was giving glam Elphaba.

  1. “I began by having her shampoo with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Shampoo and condition with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Conditioner.
  2. Then on her clean and damp hair I used Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue treatment for protection against damage and help keep hair shiny and smooth prior to blow drying.
  3. After blow drying, I pushed most of the hair to one side, basically working off a side part, and then used a 1 1/4-inch curling iron in small sections to wave out her hair.
  4. For more texture, I waved each 2-inch section in the opposite direction as the previous. I used a workable hairspray to help for a better hold for each curl.
  5. Once the entire head was curled, I used a texturizer spray to separate and build out the volume of each wave.
  6. I went back with my round brush and blow dryer and blew the face frame away from the face and added more root volume to the crown.
  7. With one last swoop with the majority of the hair to one side, I then sprayed her hair for a final finish, and we headed to the red carpet!”

And then there was the OG Galinda/Glinda herself, Kristin Chenoweth! Celebrity hairstylist Johnathan Hanousek wanted to keep Chenoweth’s hair “simple, sleek, and shiny.” Of this classic red carpet style, he said, “I didn’t want anything fussy or princess-like because her Pamela Roland gold metal mini dress was very ornate, and I felt we needed to be careful not to create anything that felt over the top or cartoonish. By keeping things simple the entire look was modern and beautiful.”

  1. “To prep Kristin’s hair, we started with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Shampoo and Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Conditioner to moisturize and strengthen her highlighted hair. I followed that up by spraying about 10 pumps of Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue to repair damage, and help reduce frizz.
  2. Next, I applied four pumps of Wella Professionals EIMI Flowing Form Anti Frizz Hair Balm through the midshaft to ends and blow dried the hair using a large round brush.
  3. Next on thin horizontal sections I sprayed Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm Hairspray and flat ironed her hair using medium heat.
  4. I used a brush and a few sprays of the Wella Professionals EIMI Glam Mist Shine Spray to smooth and shape the hair. I tucked the right side behind her ear to open her face up and so we could see her amazing earrings.
  5. I secured the hair behind her ear with a couple of bobby pins and locked it in with several strong sprays of Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm Hairspray. The result was simple glamorous healthy-looking hair.”
