This past summer, Camila Cabello decided to change her signature brown hair color to platinum blonde— a color that only lasted a season since the singer-songwriter returned to her natural brunette color and cut her hair into a fresh “Birkin Bob” for the fall. The man behind the bold hair transformation? None other than celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos.
Giannetos is well known for working with big names in the industry, like Kim Kardashian, Megan Fox, and singer and songwriter Rosalia. From editorial shoot hair styling to dramatic hair color changes, Giannetos is accustomed to meticulously caring for all hair.
The Tease spoke with Giannetos for insight into his process of returning Cabello’s platinum mane back to brown, as well as his tips and tricks to keep in mind when carrying out a blonde-to-brunette transformation.
The Tease: You’ve just worked on Camila Cabello’s hair, she’s back to brown! Tell us about the process.
Dimitris Giannetos: Camila Cabello went back to the “espresso martini” shade with a Jane Birkin inspired hair look. I used L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference to get the espresso martini shade for her hair. After cutting her hair into a long bob, I used a round brush for the blowout.
The Tease: What are some tips to keep in mind when dyeing hair back to a darker color from an ash blonde?
Dimitris Giannetos: Before making the big change from blonde to brown, it’s important to make sure your hair is being taken care of and en-route to being healthier again. To add extra moisture into the hair before your appointment, try a protein-rich hydrating conditioner to prep the hair before dyeing.
When choosing what type of dark color you want, you have to think about if you want continuous salon maintenance with it. If you don’t mind the maintenance, you can try a darker color such as warm, cool, or ash tones. If you don’t want the upkeep, try a natural look closer to your natural hair color!
The Tease: What are some tips for brunettes who might want to go blonde?
Dimitris Giannetos: The best tip for a brunette who might want to go blonde is to start off slow and small. You don’t want to immediately dye your hair platinum blonde, you need to get used to the blonde look first. A balayage is a great way to start off small if you are thinking about going blonde. Balayage features hand-painted highlights that do not require as much upkeep as highlights, and it is a gradual change from your fully brunette hair to brunette with subtle blonde highlights. If you are thinking about going blonde, do not dye your own hair at home. You should always seek a professional stylist so they can give you the look you want without damaging your hair.
The Tease: Tell me a little bit about the latest hair color trends you’ve seen emerge for fall/winter.
Dimitris Giannetos: The best winter hair colors include the classic warm hues like chestnut, auburn, chocolate brown, and caramel blonde. If you are into cooler tones, ash blonde, espresso, and gray are great for winter too.
Lived-in blonde is also a popular hair trend, as some people don’t want to give up their summer blonde color just yet. This features a root smudge with the pre-existing highlights. Red hues are also still popular, including the cowboy copper trend for fall/winter. This color blends spicy red hues with brown tones to create a softer, dull copper look. Burgundy red is also an option for those who don’t want highlights but a bold yet soft red color.
The Tease: What are some things an aspiring celebrity stylist should keep in mind?
Dimitris Giannetos: Keep putting out quality work and get as much content as you can with your work! Always be yourself, but remember to be professional as well. Having a good balance is key.
