Silicones in Hair Care: Miracle Ingredient or Hidden Culprit?

10/20/2024

We’ve all been down the beauty aisle at some point and noticed products such as shampoo labeled as “silicone-free,” but what exactly are silicones, and should we be avoiding them?

Silicones are synthetic polymers derived from silica commonly used in personal care products. In hair care, common silicones include dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, and amodimethicone.

What is the purpose of silicones?

“Silicones within hair care are often used to create somewhat of a ‘coating’ on the hair strands in order to improve overall shine and increase wet and/or dry compatibility,” explains Stephanie Rodriguez, a cosmetic chemist at Celmark International, a contract manufacturer for skincare and beauty products.

Silicones are used to improve the texture and appearance of hair as they provide key benefits such as shine, smoothness, and frizz control. Silicones act as conditioning agents. Despite these benefits, silicones are often avoided in the world of beauty. This raises the question: why do silicones spark such debate among beauty enthusiasts and are there any misconceptions?

Are silicones harmful?

In the world of beauty, the safety and effectiveness of silicones in hair care products frequently come under scrutiny. “Despite these materials being man-made, this does not imply that they are unsafe,” affirms Rodriguez. “Silicones are chemically inert, meaning they are not likely to react poorly with human skin or result in negative reactions or sensitization over time,” she explains.

So, if silicones are safe to use, then why do people opt for silicone-free products?

“The bad press surrounding silicones often involves the belief that silicones weigh hair down, resulting in flat curls or reduced volume. These days, formulators are well-versed on the types of silicones that should be used in hair care and will often use a lighter hand when formulating in order to avoid these issues,” Rodriguez explains.

However, people and brands are increasingly opting out of using silicones in beauty products due to a growing demand for natural ingredients and the desire for transparency in formulations. This drive for more natural and clean beauty options, combined with the credibility surrounding silicones, has pushed both consumers and brands to seek out silicone-free alternatives.

An additional misconception is that silicone build-up is inevitable and unmanageable due to its hydrophobic nature. In reality, regular washing can effectively prevent and manage build-up. Using a clarifying shampoo once a week can remove any residual silicones, keeping hair light and fresh. Water-soluble silicones are a great alternative if your main reason for worry is buildup. These silicones offer the smooth and shiny feel that is so sought after and easily washes out too.

Should we use silicones in hair care?

Silicones in haircare products offer numerous benefits, particularly for those seeking smooth, shiny, and manageable hair. However, they may not be suitable for everyone. Whether you embrace silicones or opt for silicone-free alternatives, the key is to find what works best for your unique hair needs.
