When ESPN Reporter Malika Andrews married network colleague Dave McMenamin this past August, she turned to her go-to hairstylist, and frequent collaborator, Sophie Rose Gutterman, to make sure her hair felt like her.
“The only thing we knew from the beginning was that we wanted to keep her curls for her wedding day. This was so important to her and me because I wanted her to feel like her truest self,” said Gutterman. She added, “Also, I asked her fiancé (which I tend to do with my brides) what his favorite hairstyle on her was and he said ‘anything curly’ which was the best answer I could have gotten!”
To narrow down the “big day” look, Gutterman created a literal hair mood board of curly hairstyles. She said, “this was a good way to look at different styles and keeping her dress in mind to come up with the perfect style.” Ultimately they landed on a classic, romantic updo that not only embraced but celebrated her curls.

Pre-Wedding
- “After playing with a few different styles we found our perfect low curly bun, soft, elegant and polished. We prepped her hair with a shades eq 6gb gloss to give her a golden shine on top of her natural color.
- Then we did a Bond Building Treatment Mask by All About Curls to nourish her hair, this combo truly makes the hair sparkle. Once we treated her hair, I requested for her to stay away from heat and do a few more masks before the big day!”
Wedding Day
- “On the day of we started with her normal every day diffuse. On wet hair applying Kerastase Nectar Thermique for heat protection and Color Wow Curly Dream Coat to control the frizz.
- After scrunching in our High-Definition Gel by All About Curls. We do our 360 diffuse to create volume and give her curls that bounce we all love!
- Once the hair is dry, I like to spray the whole thing with Living Proof Heat Styling Spray for an extra layer of protection.
- As I worked my fingers through the curls, I used EVOLVh’s Standard Hair Oil to hydrate the ends and control any frizz.
- With a hair tie I secured the bottom half of her hair and created a bun with her curls. Then with the top half curl by curl I placed her hair around the bun using UNITE Texturiza for volume and my favorite black velvet frenchies for hair security.
- Once her hair was up and secured. We pulled down some curls to frame her face keeping it soft and unintentional.
- Fighting back tears I gave her one final spray of got2b and she was ready!”
“Her wedding was truly one of the most beautiful weddings I’ve been to, and it was so much fun creating an updo that she will be able to look back in photos and see her true self. Grateful to have been a part of this beautiful union celebrating love,” added Gutterman.
