While there’s been much speculation about what the 2023 Met Gala theme will be (TikTokers were fully convinced that the theme was space!), it seems we finally have our answer.
On Friday morning, the organizers of the annual Met Gala announced via press conference that the theme for next year’s soiree will honor the decades-long work of the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. Largely known for his role as creative director of Chanel in addition to his work at Fendi, Chloé, and his own namesake label, Lagerfeld has been regarded as one of the most influential figures in fashion.
Along with the gala’s theme, a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will also pay tribute to the designer. Titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, the exhibit will gather around 150 of his original creations from all the houses he served, including his own line, to explore his “stylistic language, per Vogue’s reporting. His designs will be presented alongside their respective original sketches.
“The exhibition will explore Lagerfeld’s complex working methodology, tracing the evolution of his fashions from the two dimensional to the three dimensional,” said Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, in a statement. “The fluid lines of his sketches found expression in recurring aesthetics themes in his fashions, uniting his designs from Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld, creating a diverse and prolific body of work unparalleled in the history of fashion.”
Following the Met Gala, which takes place on the first Monday in May, the exhibition will be on view from May 5 through July 16, 2023. While we still have seven months and counting until our favorite celebrities grace the famed steps of the Met in what’s sure to be some iconic looks, I’m already preparing myself for endless amounts of tweed, pearls, and black & white as the fashion world celebrates Lagerfeld’s impact.
While we all wait for more details about the 2023 Met Gala to be revealed, be sure to follow @metmuseum for all the latest news.
