After spending the last year and a half navigating lockdowns and stay-at-home orders as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it’s safe to say that we have all become much more aware of how important it is to care for not just our bodies, but also our minds. Let’s face it: it’s hard to feel okay when your entire world has been flipped upside down, your health has been threatened, and for some people (like our salon professional community), your entire livelihood has been put at risk.
That’s why it’s been so incredible to see some of our favorite hair brands step up to the plate and use their influence and platform to not only advocate for mental health awareness but also give back to a number of mental health charities. In their own ways, these brands are helping to normalize conversations around mental health as well as emotional wellness, and ultimately, push the cause further.
Ahead, three hair brands that are making it their mission to support mental wellness.
Save Me From
After losing her own sister to suicide, beauty entrepreneur April Peck was inspired to create Save Me From, a hair treatment line that advocates for suicide prevention. With a mission to “save hair, save lives, and empower”, the brand strives to donate 10 percent of their net income to charity organization working to end suicide. Better yet, they also train stylists on how to identify suicide warning signs in potential clients.

Headquarters
Launched in January 2021, Headquarters is a “root-obsessed” hair brand that’s bringing a skincare approach to haircare. The brand is committed to helping women get to the root of their issues —whether they be on their head or inside it. That’s why Headquarters has committed to donating one percent of their sales to support grassroots mental health initiatives and programming through their nonprofit partners like the Acorn Center for Restoration and Freedom and HIR Wellness Institute.

One Little Parrot
After encountering a patient suffering from trichotillomania (a condition characterized by an overwhelming urge to repeatedly pull out one’s own hair, resulting in reptivite hair pulling and even hair loss) while working as a Psychiatric Mental Health RN, Dequnda Smith was inspired to create a haircare line that would not only help with the hair regrowth related to this condition, but also have a social impact. Thus, One Little Parrot was born. As part of their mental health mission, the natural and organic haircare brand works to connect people of color to mental health resources and encourages healing through therapy.
Recommended product: One Little Parrot Oil Blend, $11.99
