While Broadway newcomer Maleah Joi Moon may be making headlines for her first-ever win at last night’s Tony Awards, the ultra-chic cropped ‘do that she sported on the red carpet is certainly deserving of some praise, too.

Moon scored her first Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for role as Ali in Alicia Keys’ semi-autobiographical jukebox musical, “Hell’s Kitchen”. For her big night, the actress wowed in a black sequin embellished Marc Bouwer gown that was paired with matching full-length gloves. As for her hair? Moon enlisted the help of celebrity hairstylist Monaé Everett to create the perfect sleek and shiny pixie to complement her statement-making dress.

“Seeing Maleah on the red carpet, confident and radiant, was incredibly rewarding,” said Everett. “This experience became even more special when Maleah Joi Moon won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. Her look was not just about beauty, but also about celebrating her outstanding achievement.”

The Tease was lucky enough to connect with Everett to get all the details on how she created Moon’s flawless pixie. Keep scrolling for her styling breakdown, including the exact products that she used.

Get the Look:

  1. Everett began by applying the OLAPLEX Stand-Alone Treatment to the hair.
  2. Next, shampoo and condition hair with the Aveda Nutriplenish Line for deep hydration. According to Everett, “Hydrating products are a must-have after restoring protein in the hair.”
  3. As the most crucial part of preparing the hair for a short style is the wrap, Everett added the It’s a 10 Miracle Blow Dry Glossing Leave-In to emphasize her hair’s shine on the red carpet.
  4. Then, Everett applied Design Essentials Compositions Foaming Wrap Lotion and used a rat-tail comb to smooth her hair in the desired direction. She also applied Eco Style Argan Oil Styling Gel on the shorter nape and sides, then secured her hair with wrap strips as she dried under a hooded dryer.
  5. Once dried, Everett added two pumps of Ouidad Shine Glaze Serum to release the hair that was wrapped in place. She then blow-dried her hair with a brush, and trimmed it, giving her the perfect pixie cut for the occasion.
  6. Then, she added KeraCare Styling Wax Stick, before curling her hair diagonally using a 1-inch curling iron and brushing it into place.
  7. To finish, Everett secured the look with Got2B High Hold Hairspray.

Pro Tip: For formal events, Everett suggests packing a small wireless flat iron like the ¾-inch iron available in the “Artist on the Go” bag by The Monaé Life Academy. “This way, you can touch up your curls or straighten your hair anywhere,” she says.
